We're feeling really well settled these days and had a housewarming brunch on Sunday. Since the apartment was really clean I used the opportunity to take some photos to share with you! It was also a little bit sunny yesterday afternoon, which is unusual for Hamburg in the winter, making everything brighter than most days. :)
Welcome to our home!
This is what you'll see when you first walk in the door. This is our Flur, or hallway. We have shoe and coat storage here, and access to the other rooms. Most apartments in Germany have each room separated with a door so it's easier to heat only where you need to. We have an unusual open floor plan that I'll show you in a minute.

der Flur |
The first door to the right is the bathroom, or Bad. It's quite large and houses our washer/dryer (Waschtrockner).
|
das Bad |
Across the Flur from the Bad is the storage room, or Abstellraum. Here we have our 2nd freezer (Gefrierschrank), cat litter box (Katzenklo), and storage shelves.

Storage |
This room was one of the big advantages of this apartment (Wohnung). Next to the Abstellraum, and the second door on the left of the Flur is the bedroom (Schlafzimmer).

Looking in from the windows. |
The bed is one of the only pieces of furniture we brought from the US. The doors open to the balcony, and there's also a door off the kitchen. The last door off the Flur is for the dining/living room (Esszimmer/Wohnzimmer) and kitchen (Küche).

das Esszimmer |
We also brought our table with us, but everything else here we bought in Germany. Benoit had the idea to separate dining and living areas with the bookshelf.

We brought our green rug with us too, mostly because we couldn't find anyone to buy it in SF. The art in the living room is a Carolyn Williams original (one of 2 that we have!). The paper and cardboard box on the floor are for the cat - she loooooves sitting on the paper and sitting/sleeping in the box.

Das Wohnzimmer |
We added the kitchen island because otherwise we didn't have enough counter space. We still have to mount the back to the island, so yes it does look unfinished. Note the cat on the couch and the 2nd door to the balcony.

die Küche |
This photo is probably the best angle to see the room from - standing with my back to the door to the balcony.

The big picture. |
Here's what the Flur looks like on your way out - bathroom on the left and storage room on the right.

And here's what the hallway of the building looks like. There's 4 apartments per floor and we're on the 4th floor (US 5th floor). There's one floor above us with 2 apartments. We have mostly concrete walls and only have to turn on any kind of heat if the temp outside is below mid 30's or so.
We hope to see everyone here in person soon! Happy 2016!
Where is the New York ikea's original art you get for Christmas? I cant see it on the walls!
