Day 4, Jan 12 - Where the wind comes sweeping down the plains!

[Ce post en français]

Wow it's windy in OKC tonight!! Windy and bitter cold, especially considering we were in tee shirts yesterday! We made it through Arkansas to Oklahoma City today in the rain (sometimes down pouring) and fog. It was a mostly miserable drive and very stressful at times. Luckily we made it without any problems! We left Memphis early this morning at 7:30 and were sad to leave.

Foggy Mississippi

Eastern Arkansas - very flat, no trees.

Somewhere in Arkansas. Still flat, not so many trees.

There was more farming in Eastern Arkansas than we'd seen previously and not many trees. Passing through Little Rock was very uneventful as we couldn't see anything from the highway. As we continued west to Russellville, the landscape became more hilly and with more trees, but we couldn't see any of the mountains on either side of us (Ozarks to the N and Ouachita to the S) because of the fog. Around Clarksville the landscape changed again and was much more interesting - cattle farms, many more trees, and we were able to see more hills in the distance.

For lunch we found a really great Cuban restaurant in Van Buren, AR just on the boarder with OK. We had Caribbean nachos, a shredded beef dish, and a roast pork dish. We loved everything, and the total with coffee was $26! If you ever find yourself in NW AR or eastern OK, we highly recommend the Cuban Grill.

Nachos!

Pork

Beef

Our cute little car out front!

We also saw the first gas for < $3! Then, it was on to OK!

Discover the Excellence? More like discover the casinos!

Driving through this crazy storm sucked, but the clouds were incredible!

Sweet views!

Are you sick of my cloud photos yet?

Oklahoma City!!! (As boring as it looks)

The one thing we did in Oklahoma City (OKC as it's called 'round here) was visit the National Memorial. It was so windy cold and gloomy but we're both very impressed by this memorial. It's peaceful, beautiful, tasteful, non-religious (except for something across the street but I don't think it's part of the "official" memorial), and meaningful. We are very glad we were able to experience this.

Weren't we just sweating in Nashville?

After exploring the memorial we hoped back in the car to the hotel where we relaxed a bit, did laundry, Skyped with the moms, and wrote this.

View from the hotel at sunset.

We are eating at, get this, Cheever's Cafe tonight (there's also a place called S&B's Burger Joint here!!!). We'll be up at a reasonable time to head to Amarillo TX tomorrow! Fingers crossed it's not too icy out there...
